Green smoothies are all the rage right now, and for good reason, they’re packed full of yummy and healthy things for you. There’s probably a million different ways you could make a green smoothie but this is my favorite way. I received an early birthday gift in the form of a Vitamix and I can now make delicious and smooth smoothies anytime I want! I’m excited to share this recipe with you and hopefully it’s just the beginning of my smoothie recipe page!
So let’s get started!
First you need a liquid, always start your smoothie with a liquid. Typically I use milk in smoothies, but it doesn’t really seem like the best option for a green smoothie so I am using pineapple juice. Now pineapple juice is tasty, but like all juices there’s a lot of sugar, so a great substitution liquid would be coconut water.
Then add in your soft ingredients like yogurt and fresh fruit. I always have vanilla Greek yogurt in my fridge so that is typically what I use, but any yogurt is usually fine.
I always use a banana in my smoothie and a fresh one too. If you have a frozen banana that is a great option as well. At this point I also added in some green grapes. I’ve seen grapes used in a lot of smoothies and I’m so glad I tried the green grapes, it added such a great tart flavor and helped with the green color of the smoothie.
Next comes the frozen fruit. I always use frozen fruit for smoothies because it’s usually more affordable and it’s always fresh and flavorful. To help keep the color of the smoothie very green, I’m using lighter colored fruit like pineapple and peaches, mango would also be a great option.
I love using pineapple in green smoothies because the flavor is strong enough to cover the flavor of the greens and it gives the smoothie a natural sweetness. I love a green smoothie but I don’t really want to feel like I’m drinking spinach, or any other green for that matter.
At the end is when we’re going to add in any greens you want to use, you can use spinach, kale, romaine or collard greens. My green of choice is always spinach because I like the taste of spinach and it’s a little softer than the other options.
Lastly, top it off with a little ice if you want, I only use a small amount. Since the fruit I used was frozen the ice isn’t necessary, but I always prefer smoothies with a little ice.
Blend the smoothie until totally smooth and pureed and then taste and adjust anything if necessary.
This green smoothie is delicious and refreshing, you won’t feel guilty about indulging in this smoothie in the middle of the afternoon. Keep in mind this smoothie isn’t a meal replacement but rather an extra boost of vitamins in your day and can be eaten along with a meal.
I can see a lot of smoothies being made in my future and I can’t wait to share more with you. What are some of your favorite smoothie ingredients?
