To say that the last 48 hours have been overwhelming is the understatement of the century. I’ve never experienced a crazier or busier 48 hour block of time in my life. But here we are, and we’re surviving! Wednesday morning (two mornings ago) Jesse was at his last day of work as a CNA and we were preparing to move to Kennewick and leaving for a mini vacation/anniversary trip to Salt Lake City that afternoon. He called me at 11am and told me that Loma Linda Medical School called him and offered him an acceptance into the Medical School program for this fall. We’ve been waiting for this call since February when we came down and interviewed with the school. In that time we gave up hope that he would get in this year and he even submitted all his applications for 2015. Then life threw us a curveball and we went with it!
By Wednesday evening we were in Seattle to stay a night with my parents so that we could fly into Ontario, CA airport early in the morning Thursday.
Oh did I mention that school starts in two weeks from yesterday??
So here we are Friday morning – we found a house, we got all the final registration forms/medical forms filled out and turned in, we met with the Assistant Dean of Students, got Jesse fitted for his white coat, got his “official” acceptance picture taken and so on. I don’t think I’ve ever accomplished so much in 24 hours!
My biggest stress was finding a house or an apartment to live in in such short notice. I contacted the school on Wednesday to see what housing options they had left and they put me on a 5-page long wait list. I don’t do well with wait lists. We went to the housing offices first thing on Thursday morning by 11 and by 1 o’clock we had signed for a house. I’m pretty sure that’s what you call a MIRACLE! There was a home that had been vacant for a year and they finally decided to remodel and put it up for rent, so when we came in and I asked about any homes the director of housing told me they may have a possibility. She said the remodeling process wasn’t finished yet but we were welcome to take a look. Well we barely had to take more than a look to know that we weren’t going to find anything better than this. THANK YOU LORD. All the remodeling will be finished before we get back so it literally couldn’t have worked out any better.
So not only was this two bedroom/1 bathroom home within our budget but it’s also right on campus. Jesse will be able to ride his bike or walk to all of his classes year around. It’s also one of the only places that had hookups for a washer and dryer, all the other available rentals had community laundry rooms. We were able to get our keys this morning and sign for the rental so that we can move in immediately when we get here next weekend.
While meeting the Dean of Students and other facility, they couldn’t believe that 24 hours after we had gotten the call that we were already on campus with a home. Every single person was so shocked and was in total disbelief. One lady even told me she was going to call me up when she had her next party because I must be someone who gets things done! I told her when I’m stressed to the max I get things done – and quick!
The women I met yesterday must have spoken with the Dean of the School of Medicine because he called Jesse just a few hours ago and said I’d like to interview your wife for a job in my office!!!! WHAT?!?! HOW IS THIS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW??? I was completely shocked but of course agreed so we walked over to his office and I interviewed with him and then again with another lady in the office. He told us that he heard about Jesse and I and he said that whoever could get their husband packed and to school in under 24 hours and get a rental home that quick needs a job in his office!! I guess it turns out that being the last student accepted into the program really has its perks. Just proves that God has really had his hand on this whole situation. I’m totally blown away!
Loma Linda is a Seventh Day Adventist affiliated school and their Sabbath day is on Saturday so the whole campus closes down on Saturday and closes up early on Friday. We got most everything done yesterday and saved just a few things today so we could make sure everything got completed before we flew back to Boise. I also got quizzed (just sort of jokingly of course) by the Dean about how much I know about Adventists, so it looks like I need to study up a little.
We are flying back to Boise tomorrow morning and we will have two full days to finish packing our things and cleaning our apartment before we officially begin moving down to school. We’re definitely thankful for both sets of parents who have been helping us and are helping with getting down here this weekend and moving us next week/end.
So thank you to everyone for all the support – we’re extremely excited and so proud of Jesse for getting in! I think the person who was most excited for us was Papa – he told us that even when everyone had stopped praying and was planning for us to move to Kennewick, he kept praying that Jesse would get in to school. He was ecstatic that the Lord answered his prayer and was very excited for us.
It’s been a very hectic and crazy 48 hours, and it’s about to be a crazy week ahead but we’re ready for the challenge!
