It’s hot in Loma Linda right now, and by hot I mean over 100 degrees outside, how do people survive here? You can’t even go outside to enjoy the sun because it’s so hot. So instead, I’m locked up inside with all my blinds shut to help keep in the cool air and keep out the heat. It’s hard to keep a house with no insulation cool in the middle of a California summer.

We don’t have a lemon tree at our house, but most people in the area do, so when someone brought me a whole bag of lemons from their tree I figured I would make lemonade. What’s better than freshly squeezed lemonade, especially on a hot day? It’s tart, it’s delicious and very refreshing!
First things first, make the simple syrup. Make this first because then it can cool down while you get everything ready. Grab a saucepan and add equal parts water and sugar. Heat over medium-low heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool.
Cut all the lemons in half and squeeze the juice out, I used a glass juicer that I have. Set a fine mesh strainer over a bowl so the seeds and pulp are strained out.
I juiced about 12 lemons and came out with 2-1/2 cups of lemon juice.
I used 1 cup of the juice and then poured the remaining juice into mason jars and froze them so I could make fresh lemonade at another time.
Grab a large pitcher and pour in a 1/2 gallon of water, pour in the lemon juice and then pour in half of the simple syrup. Stir and taste. I ended up adding all but 1/2 cup of the simple syrup, so I probably poured in just over half a cup and that was plenty for me. If you like it sweeter, add in more simple syrup.
Pour it over lots of ice and sip away! It’s perfectly tart and sweet, and oh so refreshing on a hot summer day.
- 1 cup Sugar
- 1 cup Water
- 1 cup fresh squeezed Lemon Juice, strained. (About 5-6 lemons)
- 1/2 gallon Cold Water
- combine 1 cup sugar & 1 cup water in a saucepan, heat over medium low heat until sugar dissolves and set aside to cool.
- Pour cold water into large pitcher, add lemon juice and half of simple syrup. Taste and adjust as necessary.
- Pour over ice and enjoy.
- TIP: use less water to keep lemonade more tart, pour over ice and let ice dilute
